Twelve Days of Christmas

In these twelve short days, we were constantly reminded of how thankful we are for so many things in our lives. Here are twelve things that come to mind.

  1. Jesus our Saviour - The Christmas season reminded us of the most precious gift we have every received. A gift that sustains and fuels our lives.
  2. Family - loved ones who constantly care and make sacrifices for us.
  3. Friends - new friends and old friends who are an absolute blast to hangout with and who celebrate special moments with us.
  4. Home - or just a roof over our heads on the cold winter days.
  5. Church - brothers and sisters who challenge us to grow.
  6. Each other - whooh! woo!
  7. Jobs - God provided our current jobs and this gives us confidence that He'll provide me a job when I return to Toronto (E).
  8. Finances - money to pay the bills and to give.
  9. Delicious food and unique cafes in Toronto - this city is packed with creativity!
  10. Good health - bodies that allow us to go explore and see new parts of the city.
  11. Opportunities to meet up and reconnect with our friends.
  12. Everlasting HOPE in Christ.

Thoughts from Montréal

The land of smoked meat, poutine, bonjour, architecture, and art. It seemed liked we jammed in all the to-do's of Montreal in one short weekend. But there's always a thought that seems to cross our mind when I visit a city, who are the people that live in this place? There must be so much to learn about a city's culture that lies beneath the surface of delicious foods and beautiful architecture. What are the dreams, aspirations, fears, hope of the individuals that live in this city? One weekend can only provide but a small glimpse.

Beyond Travelling

What comes to mind when you hear the word "travelling"? New foods, travel bags, scenic sights, #wanderlust?

After our time in Seattle for a wedding, we were torn between travelling to Portland or Vancouver. We eventually decided on going to Vancouver. Originally, we wanted to go to Portland because neither of us been before and we wanted to check out the coffee shops. However, the steep costs turned us away; plus, we had friends in Vancouver.

We definitely weren't disappointed by this decision. We got to experience God working in special ways with the people we met face to face with. Travelling became more than just drinking good coffee, seeing beautiful sights, or capturing the perfect Instagram picture. It was even more than just seeing God's marvellous creation, it was about witnessing God work in His perfect ways in people. This felt like the best kind of travelling.

Living In the Present, but For the Future.

Living In the Present, but For the Future.

2015. 2016. What huge years. Quick years. Four years of university seem to have just flown by. As I look back on this year, there are numerous lessons and takeaways. God has taught me so much through His word, through experiences of Him in prayer, and through the people around me. Praise Him for all that He has done. One theme that's been constantly on my heart and progressively growing is how we're called to live in the present, but very much for the future.

Throughout the years, I noticed a reoccurring pattern in my life. I found myself constantly looking forward to the “next best thing”, seeking to find excitement or purpose in the things to come in life and I would do everything I could to be ready for it. When I was in high school, I looked forward to my grade 12 year, when I got there, I looked forward to university. In first year, I couldn’t wait till second year; when I got there I couldn’t wait till third year exchange to Europe, then I looked forward to fourth year. When fourth year had barely gone by, I looked forward to starting life as an adult. However, each time I got to the next big thing, it seemed that none of  the satisfaction lived up to the hype, nor lasted more than a little while. It seemed that I often forget that Jesus has guaranteed His people a glorious future.

And here's a picture of what we can look forward to,

“Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes" (Revelations 7:15-17)

In that time, we will fully be in the presence of God, where these is fullness of joy, and pleasures that last forever (Psalms 16:11) And that's the hope Paul writes about in this year's KCCF theme passage from Romans 8:24-25, "For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience."

We are to wait for it with patience. When my mind is set on eternity, I'm often less rattled by the things in front of me that often don’t seem to go my way. When my mind is set on eternity, I worry less about my future on this Earth. When my mind is set on eternity, I find myself desiring less the things our world tells us we need. Because of Christ, we can fully look forward to this hope of full salvation, which is certain, and know that not only will it live up to the hype, but it will blow us away.

A REASON TO LIVE

It is precisely because we have this inheritance that is to come, we can live freely for His kingdom. Jesus has commissioned us to make disciples, baptizing them, and teaching them to obey Him (Matthew 28:19-20). As students we often find ourselves putting in hard work for our future. We seek grades to get us into professional school or set us up for jobs, we seek fame to drive our self-worth. But if that’s what we’re living for, if those are the things we set our eyes on, then we’re missing out, big time. What if we being to put more work in today for the future of eternal purpose? What if instead of over-studying, we spend that time in prayer? What if instead of mindlessly scrolling on Facebook, we gather in worship? What if instead of sitting around, we share with the lost this eternal future that can also be theirs?

Let’s not live for what is perishing, and what moths will destroy, but have an eternal mindset. My prayer is that we would all live in the present but for the future; putting best use of the time, money, resources, and circumstances that God has given us to make disciples so that His name would be lifted high and “a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, before the throne and before the Lamb…crying out with a loud voice, ‘Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!’…and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying ‘Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might to be our God forever and ever! Amen.’” (Rev. 7:9-12)

Learning Mercy

Learning Mercy

XMCO3310.jpg

"Go and learn what this means, 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.'"  - Jesus

Jesus said this when He responded to the Pharisees' accusation of Him eating with sinners. It was a reference back to Hosea 6:6, which reads, "“For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.”; the Israelites "obeyed the Law,” but did not truly love God. In the same way, Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for simply performing acts of righteousness, but lacking true love for Him.

How often do our words and actions sound sweet and righteous, but our hearts are far off from what we say and do? We may go to church every Sunday, attend fellowship, read the Bible daily, pray periodically, but do we truly long for Jesus? We may often talk about how much the world needs Jesus, but when we encounter unbelievers, how often do we care about their salvation? What can bridge this gap between what we say and do with our distant hearts?

(Thoughts on our mind.)

2015: The Year of Ends and Beginnings.

What a year. Looking back and reflecting on the year of 2015, there's so much to be thankful for. Here are some scattered thoughts throughout the year.

Part I

The start of 4 months in Europe. Thinking back it all seems like a blur, but I'm extremely thankful for the opportunity to have visited so many exciting and unique countries. - Michael

Interviews. Applications. The future. These things loomed over my head, my heart filled with excitement and strangely peace. Signed a contract with a school that exceeded my expectations. God provides. - Elaine

Part II

The start of a transition into adulthood. Saying goodbyes, packing my life into 2 suitcases, and somewhere in the mix of all that - the beginning of a relationship. - Elaine

The start of my time at Bell. The start of a relationship. All of which I'm undeservable of, but God graciously provided. - Michael

Part III

First teaching job. First time moving overseas. First home. I was filled with great expectations and energy. Some of these dreams would be quickly tested and tried, discouragement settled in, but hope remained. - Elaine

Last year of school. Ever? Perhaps. It feels weird to think that 2016 will be the end of my career as a student. Extra time with family in Kingston has been precious before I move to who knows where in a year. - Michael

Part IV

Halfway point reached. Made it through a full semester of teaching, through tears, fears, and cheers, all by the grace of God. He never let me go. A special guy comes to visit too. - Elaine

Spent the final month or so back in Taiwan - nice to be home, see family, friends, and Elaine. Marching into a time of many questions as to what the future will bring, but confident only through the hope in Christ. - Michael

Jibei Island

Jibei. 2011. 2012. 2013. 2014. 2015. 6th time. Over the span of 5 years, I've seen the once "little kids" of Jibei grow up and as time passes, they have become more like my little brothers and sisters. In the kids, I see examples of lives lived out as Paul instructed Timothy to live - "Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity." Mu Laoshi, the sole missionary, has served the families of Jibei for 12 years and this outpour of Christ's love and wisdom has clearly produced fruit. These kids are different, noticeably different, not because of where they're from, their circumstances, their education, their personality, but simply because of Jesus.

- Michael

Jibei. Two days. There's a deep well of joy in these kids. A joy that stirs their hearts to love one another, to make beautiful music to worship, to serve without complaining, to persevere despite difficult circumstances, and to show respect to those in authority. I cannot explain any other of source for this other than in Christ and the hope He gives us who believe in His truth. His truth sets us free indeed.

Atop the Clouds

Atop the Clouds

Exodus 34

The Lord said to Moses, "...Be ready by the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself there to me on the top of the mountain. No one shall come up with you, and let no one be seen throughout all the mountain. Let no flocks or herds graze opposite that mountain."

It was 6am. The sun had yet to peak through the clouds. The mist flowed like a river below our feet and the cool morning air cleared our minds. We stood in the quiet daybreak amongst the rows of tea. As we gazed out from the mountains, Moses' encounter with God came to mind. God called Moses to meet with Him in the morning on top of Mount Sinai to proclaim His glory to Moses. This wasn't the first time God had called Moses up to the top of a mountain. What was the significance of meeting on a mountain peak? We wonder if it was to call Moses away from the Israelites' complaints or to show him all the beauty that can been seen in creation?

The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children's children, to the third and the fourth generation."

Merry Christmas.

Amazed by Creation

"For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made."

When we slow down out lives, put away the things that make our days "busy", and immerse ourselves in God's creation, we once again stand in awe of His greatness. As we stood by the coast, admiring the epic sunrises and sunsets, the routine of nature that reoccurs each day just never seems to get old. It's crazy that our God, the mighty creator of the universe, a perfect and holy God even cares about a little speckle like ourselves. He not only notices us, but He became man to suffer and die for us.

Capturing Purpose

Capturing Purpose

As we go about our days, we're continually amazed by the beauty we see around us. Beauty is not only seen in creation but also in our daily experiences. Christ died for us so that we might live as His sons and daughters to bring Him glory. Glory is seen in a conversation with a stranger or how God miraculously orchestrates a series of events.  We're passionate about capturing glimpses of God's all-surpassing glory in all aspects of life in hopes that you would be encouraged to seek His glory in the world. We also hope that this journal will continue to challenge ourselves to intentionally seek and be in awe of the glory of God around us.

God's Doing.

When I came to Taiwan a few months ago, my parents introduced me to a pastor of a local church who welcomed me into their church family. Today, after church, we shared with the pastor that we'll be visiting a missionary on Christmas day. The missionary serves on a small fishing island off the coast of Taiwan where few Christians exist. Michael has a long time relationship with the missionary and the children on the island, dating back to 2011. He visits them periodically whenever he's back in Taiwan and was excited to introduce me to the ministry being done there. The missionary invited us to visit and attend a Christmas program that would be led by a church group. To our surprise, the pastor explained that he was that church group who would be leading the program! Out of all the churches across Taiwan, the very church that God led me to months ago would be serving the small coastal island on Christmas that we had planned to visit! Who else could have orchestrated such circumstances other than God himself? In the grand scheme of things, such a "coincidence" doesn't seem like a big deal, but this specific instance, God reminded us that He's constantly present in our life and guiding our steps.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.    - Ephesians 1:3-6

On a side note, I've been picking up photography as a hobby and learning from Michael. Here are some of the moments we captured from the past week. :)
